Fethiye is one of those places people pass through for a single night and immediately regret not staying longer. Ölüdeniz's blue-green lagoon is one of the most photographed stretches of coastline on earth — but the region around Fethiye also hides a butterfly valley, a cold-water canyon, a war-era ghost town, and rock-cut tombs that still stand in the middle of the city. Plan on at least 4 to 5 days to do it justice.

Ölüdeniz Bay from above — the turquoise enclosed lagoon flanked by a green headland and white sand beach, small boats anchored on clear water #1
📍 15 km south of Fethiye

Ölüdeniz

One of the most photographed beaches on earth. The enclosed saltwater Blue Lagoon — a vivid emerald-green — sits right beside the long white-sand beach at Ölüdeniz. The lagoon stays flat and calm year-round because the headlands block the wind, making it safe for swimmers of all ages. Above the bay, Mount Babadağ (1,960 m) is one of the world's top paragliding launch sites — you ride the air high enough to see both the lagoon's green and the open sea's blue at once. It's the kind of view that stays with you.

Best time May–June and September–October for good weather without peak-season crowds
How to get there Dolmuş (shared minibus) from Fethiye takes about 20 minutes and costs 20–30 lira. A taxi is around 15 minutes.
Travel tips
  • Paragliding from Babadağ costs 70–90 USD, lands on Ölüdeniz beach, and takes about 45 minutes in the air. Book directly with a certified school.
  • The Blue Lagoon charges a separate entrance fee — around 100–150 lira. The main beach is free, though sun-bed hire adds up.
  • Arrive before 9 am in summer. The car park fills by mid-morning and crowds on the beach become significant by afternoon.

Butterfly Valley from the sea — steep red-brown cliffs enclosing a small white-sand beach, turquoise water all around #2
📍 30 minutes by boat from Ölüdeniz

Butterfly Valley

A valley accessible only by boat, sheltered by sheer cliffs that create a unique microclimate for more than 80 species of butterfly — including the famous Jersey Tiger. Inside the valley there's a small waterfall, hiking paths through olive groves and streamside vegetation, and a silence that feels genuinely cut off from the outside world. Rough outdoor accommodation on the beach exists for travelers who want to sleep under the stars, though facilities are minimal.

Best time June–August, when Jersey Tiger butterflies are most visible
How to get there Take a boat from Ölüdeniz pier, or join a full-day Blue Cruise that stops here as part of the route.
Travel tips
  • Boats from Ölüdeniz run several times a day; a return ticket costs around 250–350 lira. Check the last departure time before you go ashore.
  • The hike up to the waterfall involves some real scrambling over rocks. Wear flat, grippy shoes — sandals will let you down.
  • Accommodation in the valley is tents or hammocks. Facilities are very basic. It suits people who genuinely want the raw experience.

Saklıkent Gorge — sheer limestone walls narrowing to just a few metres, grey-green water rushing between the rocks, travelers wading through the cold channel #3
📍 50 km east of Fethiye

Saklıkent Gorge

One of the longest gorges in Europe — over 18 km total, with the first 4 km open to visitors. Limestone walls rise more than 300 m on either side, squeezing in some sections to just 1–2 m across. The water, fed from the Taurus Mountains, stays genuinely cold even in peak summer. Getting through means wading, which adds to the thrill. Suspended platforms over the rushing river let you sit, rest, and eat — a setup you won't find anywhere else.

Best time May–October; summer gives the lowest water levels and safest conditions. Avoid the snowmelt season and heavy rain.
How to get there Dolmuş from Fethiye toward Saklıkent, or book a full-day tour that combines Kayaköy and the gorge.
Travel tips
  • Rent a waterproof bag for your phone and pack at the entrance. Prices are low and you will get wet.
  • Water levels are high during snowmelt in March–April and parts of the gorge may be closed. Summer water is lower and easier to navigate.
  • The platform restaurants serve fresh river trout. It's genuinely good and reasonably priced.

The ruins of Kayaköy on a hillside — hundreds of roofless white stone houses climbing the slope, empty windows and doorframes, olive trees and blue mountains beyond #4
📍 8 km south of Fethiye

Kayaköy

A ghost town that belonged to a Greek Orthodox community who had lived here for over 500 years before being forced to leave after the Greco-Turkish War of 1923. More than 3,500 stone houses still stand on the hillside — silent, with windows like hollow eyes. Two churches have surviving mosaic floors and traces of fresco. The atmosphere is quietly melancholy rather than frightening. It's the kind of place that makes you think seriously about history and the lives that get caught inside it.

Best time Early morning, 8–10 am, for the golden light and before the heat builds. Avoid midday in summer.
How to get there Dolmuş from Fethiye takes 20 minutes, or combine it with a trip to Ölüdeniz, which is nearby.
Travel tips
  • Entrance costs around 200 lira. The site is open all day and you can walk freely — no compulsory guide.
  • Wear shoes that grip on rough terrain. The paths through the town are uneven stone, with steep sections.
  • The modern village of Kayaköy at the base of the hill has several good restaurants and cafes — a natural place to stop after the walk.

The Amyntas rock tomb carved into the cliff above Fethiye — an Ionic temple facade in warm orange-gold in the evening light, the town and bay spread below #5
📍 Central Fethiye, on the cliff face above the old town

Tomb of Amyntas

A tomb carved directly into the cliff face in the 4th century BC, built in the style of an Ionic Greek temple — in precise detail, though it is Lycian work, not Greek. The Lycians absorbed Hellenic artistic influence while maintaining a culture distinctly their own. Several smaller Lycian tombs are cut into the same cliff nearby. At sunset, the light hits the golden stone in a way that draws both locals and visitors to sit on the rocks beside the tomb and watch the evening arrive over the bay.

Best time Evening, 5–7 pm for sunset light, or before 9 am to beat the crowds
How to get there A 15–20 minute walk from Fethiye market, or a 5-minute taxi to the base of the staircase.
Travel tips
  • A staircase from the main road takes about 10–15 minutes to climb. Entry costs around 100 lira.
  • Come between 5 pm and 7 pm — the setting sun turns the tomb a warm orange-gold and it's one of the best photo spots in the area.
  • The tomb is named from an inscription reading 'Amyntas', but archaeologists are uncertain whose tomb it actually is. Some guides disagree on the details.

A white wooden gulet sailing through Fethiye Bay — clear blue-green water, green islands in the background, travelers relaxing on the sun deck #6
📍 Departing from Fethiye harbour into the surrounding bays and islands

Blue Cruise (Twelve Islands)

A day on a traditional wooden gulet through the bays and islands around Fethiye — the stretch known as the Twelve Islands, though there are in fact more than twelve. The boat stops at quiet coves where you can swim, snorkel over reef, and step ashore on small islands. Lunch, drinks, and a sunset from the deck are included. It's simply the best way to see the southern Aegean coast at its undisturbed best. Day trips depart in the morning and return by evening; multi-day overnight cruises are also available.

Best time May–October for calm seas and good weather. July–August is busiest and hottest but the water is clearest.
How to get there Book through agencies or your hotel in Fethiye. Boats depart from the main harbour in the centre of town each morning.
Travel tips
  • A full-day trip costs around 600–900 lira per person, including lunch. Overnight cruises cost considerably more. Book through agencies in town.
  • Ask how many passengers the boat takes before you commit. A mid-sized boat of 20–30 people is a better experience than a crowded large vessel.
  • Bring strong sunscreen and a hat. The sea breeze makes the sun feel milder than it is — many people get badly burned without realizing it.
