Where to stay in Tanna — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Tanna is an island in Tafea Province, in the far south of Vanuatu, and one of the rawest, most rewarding adventures in the South Pacific. Its headline act is Mount Yasur, an active stratovolcano widely called the most accessible on Earth — you hike to the rim of its 361-metre cone and watch lava fountain into the sky from a distance you won't find anywhere else. Beyond the volcano, Tanna delivers living kastom villages where people still keep ancient traditions, seaside hot springs at Sulphur Bay, the glowing Blue Cave, and dense tropical rainforest. This isn't a polished luxury escape — it's the island travellers who crave real nature and culture fall hard for.
Why stay in Tanna
The closest lava on Earth
Yasur is an active volcano you can actually stand beside — fountains of lava burst from the crater every few minutes, most dramatic at dusk when the red glow lights the dark sky.
Real kastom culture
Villages like Yakel still live traditionally — grass skirts, kava in the nakamal, thatched huts. This is a living culture, not a staged show for tourists.
Wild nature in one island
Seaside hot springs at Sulphur Bay, the glowing Blue Cave, jungle waterfalls, a giant banyan and both black- and white-sand beaches — all packed into one small island.
Still off the beaten track
Tanna remains an outer island with few crowds, dirt roads and simple lodges — ideal if you want the old South Pacific before it changes.

🚆 Getting around Tanna
Flying in
Take a domestic flight from Port Vila (Bauerfield, VLI) to Whitegrass Airport (TAH), about 40 minutes, with several Air Vanuatu departures a week. There's no regular tourist ferry, so flying is the main way in.
4WD & resort transfers
Most roads are rough dirt, so the easiest option is to let your accommodation arrange 4WD transfers and tours. Reaching Mount Yasur essentially requires a 4WD.
Minibuses & local trucks
Minibuses and trucks run from Lenakel through the day, paid in cash with negotiable fares — fine for budget travellers who aren't in a hurry.
Cash (vatu) is essential
The currency is the vatu (VUV). ATMs and card machines are very scarce outside resorts, so withdraw or exchange enough cash in Port Vila (where the main ATMs are) before you fly to Tanna.
Evening volcano tours
Most Yasur tours leave in the late afternoon to reach the rim at dusk. Book through your lodge; there's a separate volcano-access fee, paid in cash.

How do I get to Tanna?+
Fly domestically from Port Vila (VLI) to Whitegrass Airport (TAH) — about 40 minutes with Air Vanuatu, several times a week — then continue by resort transfer or 4WD. There's no regular tourist ferry, so flying is the main option.
Is climbing Mount Yasur safe, and when should I go?+
Yasur has erupted for centuries, but reaching the rim is generally considered safe and activity levels are assessed before tours; go with a tour arranged through your accommodation. The best time is the dry season, May–October (especially July–September), and visit at dusk for the clearest lava views.
Do I need to bring a lot of cash?+
Yes. Vatu (VUV) is the main currency, and on Tanna ATMs and card machines are very limited. Some resorts take cards but most places are cash-only, so withdraw or exchange enough while you're still in Port Vila (which has the main ATMs) before flying over.
