Where to stay in Punta del Este — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Punta del Este is South America's premier beach resort — a glamorous peninsula on Uruguay's Atlantic coast often called the 'St-Tropez of the Southern Hemisphere'. Its defining feature is two beaches with two completely different moods: Playa Brava faces the open Atlantic with surf-worthy waves and the iconic La Mano sculpture rising from the sand, while Playa Mansa hugs the calm Río de la Plata, perfect for swimming and sunsets. In summer (December–February) the marina fills with superyachts, the boutiques of Avenida Gorlero buzz, and La Barra's nightlife runs until dawn — drawing wealthy Argentines and Brazilians for the season. Out of season it turns quiet and breezy. If you want a stylish coastal escape built around wood-fired asado, fresh seafood and wine by the beach, this is the place.

When is the best time to visit Punta del Este?+
Peak season is the Southern Hemisphere summer, December–February, with 25–30°C weather, full beaches and lively nightlife — but big crowds and high prices. For quieter, cheaper visits with still-pleasant weather, try November or March.
How do I get there from Montevideo?+
The easiest option is the frequent COT bus from Montevideo via Carrasco (MVD) airport, taking about 2 hours and costing very little. Renting a car or booking a private transfer is more convenient for door-to-door travel.
Which area should I stay in?+
First-timers do best on the peninsula near the harbour and Avenida Gorlero, within walking distance of both beaches. Choose La Barra for nightlife and trendy dining, or José Ignacio for quiet luxury.
