Where to stay in Sigiriya — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Sigiriya is a 1,500-year-old rock fortress crowning Lion Rock — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where a near-200-metre granite monolith once held King Kasyapa's royal palace. Ancient frescoes of celestial maidens, symmetrical water gardens, and 360-degree views over the plains make it the centrepiece of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. Most travellers base themselves in Sigiriya village, Habarana or Dambulla, all within 20-30 minutes of the rock.

Where should I stay in Sigiriya?+
For the closest base to Lion Rock choose Sigiriya village, packed with guesthouses and eco-lodges. For resorts with pools near elephant safaris pick Habarana. On a budget or arriving by bus, Dambulla is your best bet.
Sigiriya Rock or Pidurangala — which is better?+
Sigiriya Rock is the fortress itself with frescoes and water gardens ($35 entry). Pidurangala is a viewpoint that frames Lion Rock in full for a fraction of the price and is ideal at sunrise. Many travellers do both on separate days.
How many days do you need in Sigiriya?+
Two days is ideal — one for Lion Rock, frescoes and the water gardens, another for Dambulla Cave Temple and a Minneriya elephant safari. Add a day if you want to include Polonnaruwa or Ritigala.
