Where to stay in Pretoria — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Pretoria is South Africa's administrative capital, home to the national government and a long row of foreign embassies. Locals call it "Jacaranda City": every October some 70,000 jacaranda trees burst into purple bloom, turning whole streets into flower-canopied tunnels. It runs at a calmer pace than Johannesburg, just ~55 km away, with sandstone landmarks, weighty history museums and leafy gardens around every corner. It's a relaxed, unhurried base for getting under the skin of South African history.
Why stay in Pretoria
Purple jacarandas everywhere
From late September into October the streets of Brooklyn, Arcadia and Hatfield become tunnels of purple blossom. It's the most photogenic season of the year and the reason the city earned its nickname.
Deep South African history
The Union Buildings where Mandela was inaugurated, the Voortrekker Monument, Freedom Park and Melrose House, where the treaty ending the Boer War was signed, all sit within one easygoing city.
Calmer than Johannesburg
A quieter, cleaner government town with genuinely pleasant, secure neighbourhoods like Brooklyn and Waterkloof, ideal as a relaxed base for exploring the wider Gauteng province.
Wildlife close to the city
South Africa's largest zoo sits in town, and Rietvlei Nature Reserve lets you self-drive past white rhino, buffalo and eland just minutes from the centre, no big safari needed.

🚆 Getting around Pretoria
OR Tambo Airport (JNB)
The main airport is in Johannesburg, ~50-60 km away. The Gautrain runs directly into the city, or take an Uber/Bolt for roughly R400-650, allowing 50-90 minutes depending on N1 traffic.
Gautrain
A modern express train links OR Tambo - Sandton - Hatfield/Pretoria, with a platform change at Sandton, in about 40 minutes. Buy a reusable Gold Card (around R32) and load it with credit at the machines.
Uber / Bolt
Ride-hailing apps are the easiest and most reliable way to get around town, and safer than public minibus taxis. Pay in-app, and lean on them especially after dark.
A Re Yeng BRT
Pretoria's bus rapid transit runs clean, dedicated-lane buses on key routes through the city. Useful for some trips, though most visitors still prefer the convenience of Uber and Bolt.
Money & payments
The currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). Cards are widely accepted in malls and restaurants, but carry some cash for small shops and tips. The Gautrain uses its own separate Gold Card.

When is the best time to visit Pretoria?+
Late September into October is the highlight, when the purple jacarandas bloom across the city and the weather is warm and dry at around 20-28C. More broadly, spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions, not too hot and with little rain.
Is Pretoria safe for tourists?+
As in any large South African city, base yourself in safer suburbs like Brooklyn, Waterkloof, Menlyn or Hatfield, use Uber/Bolt rather than walking at night, don't flash valuables, and avoid the CBD and Sunnyside after dark. With those habits, it's very manageable.
Should I stay in Pretoria or Johannesburg?+
For a calmer pace, history and the jacarandas, Pretoria wins. For nightlife, shopping and big-city energy, Johannesburg is livelier. The two are only ~55 km apart and linked by the Gautrain, so you can comfortably base yourself in one and visit the other.
