Where to stay in Honiara — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Honiara is the small, seafront capital of the Solomon Islands on Guadalcanal — the gateway to the archipelago and to one of WWII's most decisive battlegrounds. This isn't a city of glass towers; it's a real working town with a lively produce market, hilltop war memorials, the National Museum, and shallow shipwreck dives just down the coast. Almost everywhere to stay clusters around Point Cruz, the waterfront centre on Mendana Avenue, within walking distance of the market and wharf. Honiara suits travellers after a genuine, uncrowded slice of the Pacific.
Why stay in Honiara
WWII history you can touch
Guadalcanal was a turning-point Pacific battle. Walk the American Memorial on Skyline Ridge and see real wrecks of ships and aircraft still in place.
A market with a pulse
The country's biggest produce market sits on Mendana Avenue — fresh reef fish, mud crabs, tropical fruit, and villagers selling their catch every morning.
Shore-dive shipwrecks
Bonegi Beach, about 12 km west, has shallow sunken Japanese transports you can snorkel or scuba straight off the sand — a WWII wreck-diving classic.
Basecamp for the islands
Honiara holds the international airport (HIR) and domestic flights — the natural launchpad onward to Gizo, Munda or Marovo Lagoon.

Honiara Airport (HIR)
Honiara International (HIR), the former Henderson Field military airstrip, sits about 10 km east of the city centre.

Cash is king (SBD)

Where to go next near Honiara
Frequently asked — where to stay in Honiara
Where should I stay in Honiara?+
Point Cruz is the best base — the waterfront city centre with the main hotels (Heritage Park, King Solomon) and a short walk to the Central Market and wharf. Town Ground, just along the water, has a more upscale resort option.
How many days do you need in Honiara?+
Two to three days is plenty. Spend one on the Central Market, National Museum and the American Memorial on the ridge; another diving the Bonegi wrecks or visiting Vilu War Museum to the west — then use Honiara as a basecamp for the other islands.
How do you get around Honiara?+
Use taxis (agree the price first, no meters) or the cheap private minibuses that run from the Central Market to every neighbourhood. The town is small and Point Cruz is walkable. Always carry Solomon-dollar cash.
