Where to stay in Bo — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Bo is Sierra Leone's second-largest city after Freetown, sitting right in the heart of the country. It served as the capital of the Protectorate from 1930 to 1961, which gives it an old-town backbone layered with the energy of a student city. Today it's the leading trade, education and financial hub of the south, anchored by the bustling Bo Big Market, a colonial-era clock tower at its centre, and Njala University's Bo campus keeping the streets alive day and night. Most people here are Mende, and Krio is the everyday language. Bo's real charm is its unpretentious, easygoing warmth, plus its role as the best launch point for Tiwai Island and its rare colobus monkeys, or the Gola rainforest further south.

🚆 Getting around Bo
Getting from Freetown to Bo
About 250 km on mostly paved road, roughly a 4-hour drive. Most travellers take a shared/bush taxi from Freetown's Central Lorry Park; vehicles leave when full rather than on a schedule.
Poda-poda (minibuses)
The main minibuses linking towns across the country. Cheapest but crowded and irregular, best for budget travellers with time to spare, especially in the rainy season.
Keke & okada
Within town, three-wheeled kekes and motorbike taxis (okada) do most of the work. Always agree the fare before you get in; short hops in the centre are easily walkable.
Airport & rail
Bo's airfield no longer has regular flights, and the old railway closed in 1974, so access is essentially by road, via Freetown or Kenema.
Money & payments
The currency is the Leone (SLE) and Bo runs largely on cash. ATMs exist but can be unreliable or limited, so carry enough cash; Orange Money mobile payments are widely used.
Where to go next near Bo
Frequently asked — where to stay in Bo
When is the best time to visit Bo?+
The dry season from November to April is best: roads are passable and not flooded, and there are fewer mosquitoes. December to February is driest, with the sunniest skies. Avoid the rains (May to October), when roads turn muddy and travel slows down.
How do I get to Tiwai Island from Bo?+
Drive south from Bo along the Potoru-Tiwai road to Kambama village, then take a canoe or motorboat across the Moa River to Tiwai Island. Go in the dry season, book the camp ahead, and either charter a vehicle or join a tour, as public transport on this route is sparse.
Is Bo safe, and how do I pay for things?+
Bo is friendly and generally safe for travellers; keep an eye on valuables in crowded spots like the market, as anywhere. The city runs on cash in Leones (SLE), so carry enough since ATMs can be unreliable, and many people pay via Orange Money on their phones.
