Where to stay in AlUla — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks

AlUla is an ancient oasis carved into the sandstone canyons of northwest Saudi Arabia — and one of the most talked-about destinations to open to travelers in years. It's home to Hegra, Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, with over 110 Nabataean tombs cut from rose-gold stone more than 2,000 years ago. Add Elephant Rock — a 52-metre formation wind-sculpted into the shape of an elephant — and Maraya, the largest mirrored building on Earth. It takes effort to reach, but you'll understand why it's worth it the moment you arrive. This guide covers where to stay, what to see, and where to eat.

🚆 Getting around AlUla

✈️

Prince Abdul Majeed Airport (ULH)

AlUla's airport (code ULH) sits about 25 km from town, with domestic flights from Riyadh (~1h10), Jeddah (~1h25) and Dammam, plus seasonal international routes from Dubai and Doha.

🚗

Rental car / self-drive

The most flexible option. Roads are new and excellent; it's about a 3-hour drive from Medina or Tabuk. Sights are spread 10–40 km apart, with rentals at the airport and in town.

🚐

Shuttles & rawi-guided tours

Several headline sites (Hegra, Dadan, Jabal Ikmah) are accessible only via guided rawi tours, bookable through Experience AlUla with shuttle transfers from set meeting points.

🚕

Taxis / Careem

Taxis and the Careem app (similar to Uber) work in town, but cars are limited and the sights are far apart — better for short hops than a full day of touring.

💳

Cash, cards & entry fees

The currency is the Saudi riyal (SAR). Cards are widely accepted at hotels and larger venues; carry some cash. Book heritage-site entry in advance via Experience AlUla.

Where to go next near AlUla

Frequently asked — where to stay in AlUla

When is the best time to visit AlUla?+

November to February, when daytime temperatures sit around 20–25°C — ideal for exploring the open-air heritage sites and timed with the AlUla Moments and Winter at Tantora festivals. Summer (May–Sep) tops 40°C and is best avoided.

Do I need to book Hegra in advance?+

Yes. Hegra can only be visited on a guided rawi tour — you can't drive in independently. Book tickets or tours through Experience AlUla ahead of time, especially during the busy winter season.

How many days should I stay, and where?+

Plan for 2–3 full days (one for Hegra plus Dadan/Jabal Ikmah, another for Elephant Rock, the Old Town and Maraya). History lovers should stay in the Old Town, luxury seekers in Ashar Valley (Banyan Tree/Habitas), and those wanting proximity to the highlights near Hegra–Maraya.
