Where to stay in Sintra — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Sintra is a fairy-tale town of palaces in the hills, just 40 minutes by train from Lisbon. The candy-colored Pena Palace crowns a forested peak, the mysterious gardens of Quinta da Regaleira spiral underground through an Initiation Well, the ancient Moorish Castle hugs the ridge, and the National Palace's twin conical chimneys mark the old town below. All of it sits within a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape — cool, green and misty year-round, with bus 434 looping up to the palaces from the station.
Why stay in Sintra

Is it worth staying overnight in Sintra, or just a day trip?+
If you can, stay one night. You'll reach Pena Palace early before the Lisbon tour buses arrive, when it's far quieter, and get to enjoy the calm old town in the evening. A day trip works too, but take one of the first trains, before 9am.
How many palaces can you see in one day in Sintra?+
Two to three is realistic — for example Pena Palace plus the Moorish Castle (on the same hill), then Quinta da Regaleira in the old town. Adding Monserrate or Cabo da Roca needs half a day to a full extra day.
Do I need to book Pena Palace tickets in advance?+
Yes, especially from Easter to October. Entry to the interior state rooms is by 30-minute timed slot and these sell out fast in high season, so booking online ahead saves you from queueing on site.
