Where to stay in Algarve — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
If you're chasing the most jaw-dropping stretch of coast in southern Europe, the Algarve is it — Portugal's southern shore, where golden sandstone cliffs run for nearly 200 kilometres, carved by the Atlantic into sea caves, rock arches and tiny hidden beaches you reach only by boat or a steep flight of steps. The headline act is Benagil Cave, a sea grotto with a natural skylight punched through its dome, but the whole coast delivers: world-class beaches like Praia da Marinha, the rock pillars of Ponta da Piedade, and Moorish hilltop towns inland. Add over 300 days of sunshine a year, charcoal-grilled seafood and laid-back fishing harbours, and it's easy to see why this is one of Europe's favourite beach escapes.

🚆 Getting around Algarve
Faro Airport (FAO)
The Algarve's only international airport, in Faro, with direct flights from cities across Europe. It's the main gateway to the region; from here you fan out east or west by car, train or bus.
Renting a car is easiest
Many of the best beaches and caves sit outside the towns, beyond public transport. Renting from Faro Airport (Europcar, Hertz, Sixt and more) gives you the most freedom — roads are good and easy to drive.
CP coastal railway
Comboios de Portugal (CP) runs a coastal line from Lagos in the west to Vila Real de Santo António in the east, via Faro and Tavira. Cheap, and booking ahead can save up to 65%.
EVA intercity buses
Most intercity buses are run by EVA, linking the main resort towns. A tourist pass gives unlimited travel across the EVA and Frota Azul networks — handy if you're hopping between towns without a car.
Uber / Bolt & taxis
Uber and Bolt work well in the bigger hubs — Faro, Albufeira and Vilamoura — though waits can be longer in smaller towns. A taxi from the airport into Faro city runs about €10–15.

Do I need to rent a car in the Algarve?+
Not essential, but it helps a lot. Many beaches and caves are outside the towns and hard to reach by public transport. If you base yourself in a hub like Lagos or Albufeira and lean on the train, buses and boat tours you can manage fine — but to chase hidden coves on your own schedule, a rental car from Faro Airport is the best move.
How do I visit Benagil Cave, and can I go year-round?+
You can only reach the cave by boat tour, kayak or SUP from Benagil beach — swimming in and landing inside are no longer allowed. Tours run year-round but get busy in summer (June–September), so go early to dodge the crowds and rougher water. Smaller boats can get deeper inside than the larger ones.
Which area of the Algarve should I stay in?+
Families and anyone wanting everything in one place tend to pick Albufeira (close to the airport). Couples and slow-travellers love quieter Tavira or Carvoeiro. For beaches plus an old town to wander, choose Lagos; for luxury and golf, head to Vilamoura.
