Portugal — find the right stay, from deciding to booking

“Lisbon's trams, Porto's wine, and the Algarve's cliffs”

Portugal is Europe's best-value and most charming destination — Lisbon's hill-climbing trams, Porto's iron bridge and wine, the colorful palaces of Sintra, and the golden cliffs and sea caves of the Algarve, all paired with azulejo tiles, custard tarts, and kind people, at prices lower than its neighbors.

Car rental

Essential for the Algarve and outer Sintra — drive on the right, roads are good.

✈️

Flights to the islands

Fly Lisbon to Madeira/the Azores in ~1.5–2 hours (TAP).

🛴

Tuk-tuk tours of the old-town hills, and funiculars up the steep slopes.

🛂 Etiquette & culture in Portugal

🍽️

Dinner not as late as Spain

Dinner runs 19:30–21:00, with restaurants closing a little earlier than in Spain.

🥐

Couvert costs money

The bread and nibbles placed on the table are charged — tell staff if you don't want them.

💶

Tipping

Not required — rounding up or 5–10% at sit-down places is plenty.

🚋

Watch for pickpockets

Tram 28 and tourist spots have pickpockets — keep your things close.

⛰️

Hilly cities

Lisbon and Porto are steep — wear comfortable shoes; lifts and funiculars help.

🗓️ When to visit Portugal

🌸

Spring

Mar – May

Lovely weather, flowers in bloom, and not too crowded yet — the best time.

☀️

Summer

Jun – Aug

Good sun, a lively Algarve, and the sardine festival, but crowded and prices rise.

🍇

Autumn

Sep – Oct

The grape harvest, still-warm seas, fewer crowds, and good prices — great value.

🌧️

Winter

Nov – Feb

Some rain but not bitterly cold — city sightseeing is fine, accommodation is cheap, and Madeira is warm year-round.

FAQ — visiting Portugal

How many days do I need in Portugal?+

7–10 days — Lisbon for 3 nights (+ a Sintra day trip), Porto for 2 nights, and the Algarve for 2–3 nights if you like beaches.

Lisbon or Porto — which to choose?+

Short on time, choose Lisbon (big, complete, near Sintra and beaches); Porto is smaller, with the charm of a wine city — best to visit both if you can.

How do I get to Benagil Cave?+

By boat, kayak or SUP from Benagil beach or Lagos — book a tour ahead in high season.

Is Portugal expensive?+

It's the cheapest in Western Europe — food, wine and accommodation are clearly better value than Spain or Italy.

Tips before you go to Portugal

  1. Buy a Viva Viagem card for Lisbon's trams, metro and funiculars.
  2. Visit Sintra's Pena Palace early to avoid long queues, and book tickets online.
  3. Book Benagil Cave tours in advance in summer.
  4. Watch for pickpockets on Tram 28.
  5. Try a custard tart at the original Pastéis de Belém in Lisbon.
