Where to stay in Zakopane — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Zakopane is Poland's winter capital — a small resort town tucked at the foot of the Tatra Mountains in the country's far south, sitting around 800-1,000 metres above sea level. It blends striking timber Zakopane-style houses, world-class hiking trails, the mirror-clear Morskie Oko lake, and a cable car to Kasprowy Wierch where, on a clear day, you can see across Poland and into Slovakia. In winter it's a ski town; in summer it's a hiker's paradise — an easy pick for anyone who loves the mountains.
Why stay in Zakopane
Gateway to the Tatras
Tatra National Park starts right at the edge of town, with trails for every level — from flat lakeside walks to Rysy, Poland's highest peak at 2,499 m.
Poland's winter capital
Come winter it's ski heaven: slopes ring the town, plus lifts, cable cars and the Wielka Krokiew jump that regularly hosts the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup.
Zakopane-style architecture
Steep-roofed timber houses carved in Highlander motifs and blended with Art Nouveau, pioneered by Stanisław Witkiewicz — a look you won't find anywhere else.
Górale highlander culture
The Górale highlanders have their own music, dress and food. Try smoked oscypek cheese and tangy kwaśnica sauerkraut soup and you'll be hooked.
