Where to stay in Madang — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Madang has been called "the prettiest town in the South Pacific" for decades, and one harbour sunset is usually enough to settle the argument. This easygoing coastal town on Papua New Guinea's north coast is walkable end to end in fifteen minutes, yet the bay around it is scattered with more than 30 coral-laced islands built for diving, snorkelling and slow island-hopping. There are no high-rises and no pretensions here — just world-class reefs minutes from shore, a relaxed seafaring rhythm, and one of the gentlest places to start getting to know PNG.
Why stay in Madang
World-class diving, right offshore
The reefs of the Bismarck Sea sit close to shore with good visibility almost year-round. Signature sites like Magic Passage and Planet Rock serve up hard and soft coral, fish schools and dramatic drop-offs.
Easy island-hopping
A short boat ride reaches Kranket, Siar and Samun islands — clean beaches, great snorkelling, picnic spots, and the chance to meet island communities first-hand.
Living culture, not a show
At Bilbil Village, women still hand-coil clay pots without a wheel, smooth them with shells and fire them on the beach — a centuries-old craft you can watch and buy from.
Nature on the doorstep
A short drive reaches Balek Wildlife Sanctuary, with its clear sulphur creek, limestone cave and tame eels and turtles. In town, thousands of flying foxes stream out of the trees at dusk.

🚆 Getting around Madang
Fly into Madang Airport (MAG)
Most travellers fly from Port Moresby with Air Niugini or PNG Air — about a one-hour hop, several times a day. The airport is roughly 10 minutes from town by car.
Walk the town
Madang is small enough to cover on foot in daylight, which is how most visitors get around. Keep phones and cameras out of sight while walking.
PMVs (public transport)
Minivans and buses run set routes for a few kina. Flag one down, pay the conductor, and ask fellow passengers to tell you when to get off.
Taxis & hotel transfers
Have your hotel call a taxi, especially after dark. Many resorts run airport transfers and boat shuttles out to the islands.
Cash (Kina, PGK)
The currency is the kina, divided into 100 toea. Carry cash — ATMs and card terminals are limited, and the market and PMVs are cash only.

How do I get to Madang?+
The main way is to fly from Port Moresby into Madang Airport (MAG) with Air Niugini or PNG Air — about a one-hour flight with several departures a day. From the airport it's roughly 10 minutes into town by taxi.
When should I visit, and can you dive year-round?+
Madang's reefs have good visibility and are diveable almost year-round thanks to the sheltered bay. The drier months (roughly May–October) tend to bring clearer skies and calmer seas, ideal for island trips and diving.
Is Madang safe for travellers?+
The town is comfortable to walk by day, but keep valuables out of sight and avoid walking alone after dark — have your hotel call a taxi. Women shouldn't ride PMVs alone. Plan cash and accommodation ahead for peace of mind.
