Where to stay in Nizwa — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Nizwa is Oman's former capital, tucked into a valley in the Hajar Mountains about 140km from Muscat. Its draw is the massive round Nizwa Fort, built in 1668, the green date-palm groves fed by ancient falaj water channels, and the famous Friday goat market where locals still auction livestock the old way. As the gateway to the rose-terraced heights of Jebel Akhdar, Nizwa delivers the authentic, slow-paced Oman that Muscat can't.
Why stay in Nizwa
The largest fort in Arabia
The round Nizwa Fort was built in 1668 by Imam Sultan bin Saif; its central tower took 12 years to raise. It's Oman's most-visited monument, and the rooftop gives 360-degree views over the palm groves.
A real working market
Every Friday morning, villagers bring goats, sheep and cattle to auction in the open ring — a tradition that's run for centuries, not a tourist show. Arrive before 7am to catch it.
Gateway to Jebel Akhdar
The 2,000m Green Mountain is cool year-round and famous for damask roses grown on terraced farms. It's about an hour's drive from town, though you'll need a 4x4 to clear the checkpoint.
The souq's edible souvenirs
Nizwa Souq has dedicated stalls for halwa, dates, spices and Bedouin silver. It's a calmer, cheaper place to shop than Muscat's Mutrah Souq.
