Where to stay in Sossusvlei — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Sossusvlei is the heart of the Namib, the oldest desert on Earth — soaring rust-orange dunes, the cracked white clay pan of Deadvlei studded with 900-year-old blackened camelthorn trees, and Big Daddy, a dune rising roughly 325m. Every lodge clusters around Sesriem, the park gate, so choosing the right base matters: your distance to the gate decides whether you catch sunrise on the dunes before the crowds.
Why stay in Sossusvlei
Legendary Deadvlei
A white clay pan dotted with charcoal-black camelthorn trees, dead for around 900 years, framed by orange dunes — Namibia's signature shot.

Big Daddy tops out near 325m and Dune 45 at 170m — climb for sunrise, then run straight down the soft sand.
Africa's best night skies
The NamibRand Reserve is Africa's only International Dark Sky Reserve — the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye.
Desert-adapted wildlife
Oryx, springbok and ostrich roam the plains, alongside the mysterious Fairy Circles on the drive into the dunes.

🚆 Getting around Sossusvlei
Self-drive from Windhoek
About 350–400km, 5–6 hours via Solitaire. Most roads are gravel (C19/D826) — a high-clearance car or 4×4 is recommended.
4×4 for the last 5km
The final stretch from the 2×4 car park to Sossusvlei/Deadvlei is deep sand — you need a 4×4 or the park shuttle.
Fly in from Windhoek
Charter flights land at the Sesriem/Solitaire airstrip in about 1 hour — fastest and easiest. Many lodges transfer from the strip.
Park fees & gate times
Entry is around 150 NAD per person plus a vehicle fee. The inner gate opens an hour before sunrise — staying inside the park gets you in first.
Cash & cards
The Namibian dollar (NAD) is pegged 1:1 to the South African rand (ZAR). Cards work at lodges and fuel stops, but carry cash in case the network is down.

Should I stay inside the park or at the gate?+
For crowd-free sunrise at Deadvlei or Dune 45, stay inside the park (Sossus Dune Lodge or Sesriem Camp) — you enter an hour before vehicles from outside. The gate-front Sossusvlei Lodge is more comfortable and has fuller facilities.
Do I need a 4×4?+
A high-clearance car handles the road from Windhoek to Sesriem fine, but the last 5km from the car park to Sossusvlei is deep sand — you'll need a 4×4 or a park shuttle ticket.
When is the best time to visit?+
The dry season, May–September, brings clear skies and mild days (cold nights) — ideal for dune climbs and stargazing. In summer (Nov–Apr) midday tops 40°C, so explore before noon.
