Where to stay in Chisinau — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, is one of Europe's most underrated city breaks. It flies under the radar, but once you start walking its leafy boulevards you realise how easygoing and charming it is, this is one of the greenest capitals in Eastern Europe. At its heart sits the gleaming white Nativity Cathedral, flanked by the elegant Arch of Triumph and the shady Stefan cel Mare park where locals gather every evening. Stroll the main artery, Bulevardul Stefan cel Mare, and you'll pass cafes, restaurants and shops the whole way. Best of all, Chisinau is the launch pad for Cricova, one of the largest underground wine cellars on the planet, just 15 km out of town. With low prices, friendly locals and barely a tourist crowd in sight, it's an ideal pick for travellers who want a slice of Europe off the beaten path.
Why stay in Chisinau
Moldova's wine capital
Moldova is serious wine country, and Chisinau is the base for visiting Cricova and Milestii Mici, vast underground cellars with tunnels stretching over a hundred kilometres. Every early October the city centre hosts the lively National Wine Day festival.
Europe on a budget
Chisinau is among the cheapest European capitals to visit. Accommodation, meals and city transport all cost a fraction of Western Europe, making it a dream for backpackers and value-minded travellers.
A green, walkable city
The centre is full of parks and mature trees, from the Stefan cel Mare gardens to Valea Morilor lake. You can wander all day in the shade without the crowds or chaos of bigger capitals.
Off the tourist trail
Chisinau isn't on the mainstream circuit, so there are no queues and little need to book far ahead. You get an authentic mix of Soviet-era and Eastern European atmosphere at your own pace.

Yellow minibuses run most frequently and are dirt cheap, the locals' main way to get around. Flag them at stops, though they get crowded at rush hour.
Taxis + apps
Taxis run 24/7; book via an app (such as Yandex Go) for a set price. A ride from the airport to the centre runs about 150-200 leu.
Walking the centre
Centru is very walkable, with the main sights clustered along Stefan cel Mare boulevard. Carry some leu in cash, as smaller shops don't always take cards.
