Where to stay in Nouakchott — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Nouakchott is the capital of Mauritania, a city wedged right on the seam where the Sahara Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. Sixty years ago it was little more than a small village; today it sprawls into a metropolis of over 1.4 million people. The unmissable highlight is the Port de Pêche, the seaside fish market, where every afternoon hundreds of brightly painted wooden pirogues come surfing back to shore laden with the day's catch. Add the National Museum, the towering Saudique Mosque, and a camel market on the city's edge, and you have a capital that isn't postcard-pretty but is raw and real, perfect for adventurous travellers who want West Africa unfiltered.

🚆 Getting around Nouakchott
Nouakchott-Oumtounsy Airport (NKC)
A modern international airport opened in 2016, about 25 km north of the city. A taxi into town takes 30–40 minutes; the airport has currency exchange, ATMs and car rental.
Taxis (agree the fare first)
Most taxis have no meter, so always agree the price before getting in. Fares from the airport are fairly fixed; fares to the airport are negotiable.
Minibuses & shared taxis
The cheapest way locals get around — minibuses and shared taxis run throughout the day, with Carrefour Sabah a key departure point.
Ouguiya (MRU/UM)
The local currency is the ouguiya, and Mauritania runs largely on cash — most shops don't take cards. Carry cash, exchange at the airport or in town; ATMs exist but aren't everywhere.
Out-of-town trips
Banc d'Arguin is about 200 km (~3 hrs) north; the Adrar desert and the iron-ore train are other classics. Hiring a car with driver or joining a local tour is the usual way.
