Where to stay in Nosy Be — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Nosy Be — literally "Big Island" — is Madagascar's busiest and best-loved beach destination, a volcanic island floating in the Mozambique Channel just 8 km off the northwest coast. Across its 320 km² you'll find powder-white beaches, clear turquoise water, and coral reefs ranked among the world's finest, all wrapped in the sweet scent of ylang-ylang blossoms grown across the island for perfume oil — earning it the nickname "the perfumed island." The real draw is the mix: beaches, world-class snorkelling, black lemurs, and humpback whales, all in one place.
Why stay in Nosy Be
Beaches without the long-haul to the Maldives
Andilana Beach has wide, soft white sand, shallow clear water, and almost no vendors, while Ambatoloaka and Madirokely buzz with beach bars for sunset drinks — pick your pace, chilled or lively.
World-class reef snorkelling
The reef at the Nosy Tanikely marine reserve has been named one of the 10 most beautiful snorkelling sites on Earth — turtles, reef fish, and in season even whale sharks.
Rare endemic wildlife
Lokobe National Park is the island's last patch of original rainforest, home to black lemurs, chameleons, and some of the world's smallest frogs. Nearby Nosy Komba is the famous "Lemur Island" where you get up close.
Scent and Sakalava culture
The island is dotted with ylang-ylang, vanilla, and sugar-cane plantations. Visit a traditional essential-oil distillery and the 200-year-old Sacred Banyan Tree of the Sakalava people — there's more here than just beach.

When is the best time to visit Nosy Be?+
The dry season, May to October, is best — warm, low humidity, clear skies, and calm seas ideal for diving, especially July to September for the sunniest weather and humpback whale watching. October–November brings a chance to swim with whale sharks. Avoid January–March, the cyclone-risk and rainy months.
Which area should I stay in?+
For nightlife and budget, choose Ambatoloaka (bars, restaurants, social scene). For mid-range value, Madirokely. For luxury, honeymoons, and quiet, Andilana has the best beach but you rely on hotel transport. Hell-Ville is better for errands than relaxing.
What currency is used, and can I pay by card?+
Only the Malagasy Ariary (MGA) is accepted for direct payment — euros and dollars aren't, even in tourist spots. Bring cash; ATMs in Hell-Ville dispense MGA only with a per-transaction limit. Cards work at larger hotels and restaurants, and euros get the best exchange rates.
