Where to stay in Klaipėda — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Klaipėda is Lithuania's only coastal city — and it doesn't feel like the rest of the country at all. For centuries it was Prussian-German Memel, so the Old Town comes with pastel half-timbered (fachwerk) houses, cobbled lanes and a cosy Theatre Square instead of the usual Baltic baroque. But the real draw is its role as the gateway to the Curonian Spit — a UNESCO-listed sand peninsula of towering dunes, pine forest and the candy-coloured fishing village of Nida. A 10-minute ferry takes you from a working port city to that other world. If you want a small, walkable, unhurried town paired with wild dunes and Baltic beaches, this is it.
Why stay in Klaipėda
A Germanic Old Town
Klaipėda was Prussian Memel for centuries, so its core is all fachwerk houses, cobblestones and a theatre square — visibly different from anywhere else in Lithuania.
Gateway to the Curonian Spit
A 10-minute ferry drops you onto a UNESCO World Heritage sand peninsula of huge dunes, pine forest and sweeping lagoon views.
Fresh Baltic seafood
Traditional smoked fish, herring and relaxed riverside restaurants — and prices that stay friendlier than Western Europe.
Compact and laid-back
Small, uncrowded and walkable: you can cover the Old Town, the waterfront and the sculpture park comfortably in a day.
