Kyrgyzstan — find the right stay, from deciding to booking

“Lake Issyk-Kul, the Tien Shan, yurts and a living nomadic culture”

Kyrgyzstan is a land of mountains and grasslands in Central Asia — Lake Issyk-Kul, the world's second-largest mountain lake, the snowy Tien Shan range, Song-Kol Lake amid grazing pastures, Ala-Archa park near the capital, and a living nomadic yurt culture — a country for travelers who want to experience genuine nature and a traditional way of life.

🚆 Getting around Kyrgyzstan

🚌

Marshrutka

Minibuses run between towns, cheap but they leave when full and have no clear timetable.

🚗

Shared taxis

Share a taxi with other passengers between towns — faster than the bus for about the same fare.

🚙

4WD rental

Charter for trips — mountain routes need four-wheel drive, and hiring a local driver is more convenient.

✈️

Manas Airport

FRU in Bishkek connects many major cities in Asia and Russia; there are no direct flights from Thailand.

🚡

Cable cars

The Ala-Archa cable car climbs the mountain quickly, and the Bishkek cable car offers lovely city views.

🛂 Etiquette & culture in Kyrgyzstan

The yurt way of life

Round felt tents that fold away within the hour, still used for real by nomadic families.

🐎

Horse etiquette

Horses are valued property; ask permission before riding, and always dismount when approaching a yurt.

🤝

Welcoming guests

Hosts serve tea, butter and kumis as a sign of welcome; if you decline, at least take a taste first.

👒

The Kalpak

The white felt hat is a national symbol, worn at festivals and in daily life.

🙏

Islam

Most people practice a relaxed form of Islam; dress modestly when entering a mosque.

FAQ — visiting Kyrgyzstan

7–10 days — Bishkek 1–2 days + Issyk-Kul 2–3 days + Karakol 2 days + Song-Kol 1–2 days, traveling by marshrutka or shared taxi.

Do Thai passport holders need a visa?+

Check the latest visa requirements (an e-visa is available / some nationalities enter free) — the situation can change, so check the embassy site before you travel.

How do I get around between towns?+

Marshrutka (minibuses) and shared taxis are the main options, cheap but for mountain routes it's safer to rent a 4WD with a local driver.

Do I need to book a yurt stay in advance?+

In summer (Jun–Aug) you should book ahead through a local travel agent, especially the very popular yurt camps by Song-Kol.

Tips before you go to Kyrgyzstan

  1. Always carry som cash; cards are only accepted in the big cities.
  2. Some mountain routes are open only Jun–Sep, so plan carefully.
  3. Buy a SIM card at Manas Airport — cheap, with good data.
  4. The Song-Kol yurt camps are cold even in summer, so bring warm clothes.
  5. Tap water isn't drinkable everywhere — buy bottled water or use a filter.
  6. Hire a local guide for mountain trips — it helps with both the route and communication.
