Where to stay in Killarney — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
If you want one Irish town you can stroll all day and still reach world-class nature within five minutes, Killarney is it. This small town in County Kerry, in Ireland's southwest, has a population of around 14,000 but welcomes over 1.1 million visitors a year — because it's the gateway to Killarney National Park, Ireland's first national park, and the starting point of the Ring of Kerry, one of Europe's most beautiful scenic drives. The town itself is packed with old pubs, proper Irish restaurants, and live trad music most nights. Just outside lie lakes, a 500-year-old castle, waterfalls, and the MacGillycuddy's Reeks — Ireland's highest mountains. This guide helps you pick a neighborhood, plan your days, and eat well.

🚆 Getting around Killarney
Kerry Airport (KIR)
The nearest airport, at Farranfore about 15 km away. A direct bus reaches town in ~30 min, or take the train from Farranfore station to Killarney in ~21 min; a taxi is ~14 min.
Irish Rail
Killarney station sits in the town centre with direct trains from Dublin Heuston (about 3h 15m, several daily) and easy connections to Cork.
Rent a car (drive on the left)
The best way to do the Ring of Kerry and surrounding peninsulas is by car. Ireland drives on the left; rural roads are narrow and winding, so take it slow.
Bus Éireann
The bus station is beside the train station, with links to Cork, Tralee and Dingle, plus day-tour coaches around the Ring of Kerry for non-drivers.
Walk + jaunting car
Everything in town is walkable. In the park, ride a traditional jaunting car and hear stories from a local jarvey, or rent a bike to explore on your own.

When is the best time to visit Killarney?+
Late spring to early autumn (May–September) brings the best weather, less rain and long daylight — ideal for driving the Ring of Kerry and hiking. Irish weather changes fast, though, so always pack a rain jacket.
Do I need to rent a car, or can I get around without one?+
You can enjoy the town and the national park car-free — on foot, by bike, or by jaunting car. But to drive the Ring of Kerry yourself, a rental is easiest. If you'd rather not drive, day-tour coaches run from town.
How many days do I need?+
At least 2–3. Spend one day on the park and town (Ross Castle, Muckross, Torc Waterfall) and a full day on the Ring of Kerry. With more time, add the Dingle Peninsula or the Gap of Dunloe.
