Where to stay in Vík — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks

Vík í Mýrdal is Iceland's southernmost village — a tiny settlement of around 750 people sitting right on the Ring Road (Route 1), about 180 km and a 2.5-hour drive southeast of Reykjavík. Its claim to fame is Reynisfjara, the jet-black sand beach framed by hexagonal basalt columns and the dragon-spine Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising offshore. The village itself you can walk across in 15 minutes, but it sits at the centre of a world-class cluster of sights: the puffin cliffs of Dyrhólaey, the Sólheimajökull glacier tongue, and the thundering Skógafoss waterfall. For anyone driving the Ring Road, Vík is the south coast's essential overnight base.

Why stay in Vík

🏖️

A legendary black beach

Reynisfjara ranks among the world's most beautiful non-tropical beaches — pure black volcanic sand, a wall of hexagonal basalt columns, and the Hálsanefshellir cave, all in one spot.

🧭

Perfect south coast base

Vík sits midway between Skógafoss and Sólheimajökull to the west and Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon and the Eldhraun lava fields to the east — sleep here and strike out in any direction.

🐧

Puffins up close

From mid-May to August thousands of puffins nest on the Dyrhólaey cliffs and Reynisfjall ridge, viewable for free at remarkably close range.

🌌

Dark skies for aurora

With almost no light pollution outside the village, the Sept–March season offers a real chance of seeing the northern lights dance above the Reynisdrangar stacks.

🚆 Getting around Vík

🚗

Rent a car for the Ring Road (best option)

The best way is to rent a car in Reykjavík and drive Route 1 (the Ring Road) ~180 km in about 2.5 hours. The road is paved and in great shape; in winter check weather and road conditions at road.is.

🚌

Strætó public bus

Without a car, Strætó route 51 runs from Mjódd terminal in Reykjavík to Vík in about 2h40, but service is limited (1–2 a day), so plan your timing carefully.

✈️

Keflavík Airport (KEF)

Iceland's gateway is Keflavík International Airport, about 230 km from Vík. Pick up a rental car at the airport and drive straight down in roughly 3 hours.

🚶

On foot in the village

Vík itself is tiny — you can walk from your lodging to the restaurants, supermarket and church in 10–15 minutes, but you'll need a vehicle for the surrounding sights.

💳

Pay by card, skip the cash

Cards work almost everywhere in Iceland, including fuel stations and small shops. The currency is the Icelandic króna (ISK), but you'll rarely need cash.

Where to go next near Vík

Frequently asked — where to stay in Vík

How many nights should I stay in Vík?+

If you're driving the full Ring Road, one night is enough to use Vík as a midpoint stop. To explore the south coast at a relaxed pace (Reynisfjara, Dyrhólaey, Sólheimajökull, Skógafoss), two nights is more comfortable. Rooms are limited, so book months ahead, especially in summer.

Is Reynisfjara beach really dangerous?+

Yes — take it seriously. Sneaker waves surge ashore without warning and have caused fatalities. Never turn your back on the sea, don't stand near the waterline, and always heed the colour-coded warning signs (green/yellow/red). During red alerts the cave and basalt columns are closed.

When is the best time to visit Vík?+

Summer (June–August) brings nearly 21 hours of daylight, 10–15°C temperatures and puffins — ideal for being outdoors. For the northern lights, come September–March, when dark skies give a real chance of seeing aurora above the Reynisdrangar stacks.
