Where to stay in Kumasi — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Kumasi is Ghana's second city and the capital of the Ashanti Kingdom, where a reigning king (the Asantehene) still holds court today. Locals call it the "Garden City" for its leafy streets, and "Oseikrom" in Twi. It's home to Manhyia Palace, the sprawling Kejetia / Kumasi Central Market — one of the largest in West Africa — and sits under an hour from the Bonwire kente-weaving village. If you want to feel Ghanaian culture at its deepest, this is the place to start.
Why stay in Kumasi
A living kingdom
Kumasi isn't just historic — it's the seat of a real, reigning Ashanti king (the Asantehene). Manhyia Palace and the Akwasidae festival, held every six weeks, let you witness a royal court that's very much alive, not behind glass.
Birthplace of kente
Those world-famous geometric, jewel-toned cloths come from Bonwire village near Kumasi. Watch weavers work narrow strips on traditional looms and buy straight from the source — far cheaper than in Accra.
West Africa's great market
Kejetia / Kumasi Central Market covers roughly 12 acres with tens of thousands of stalls, mixing a renovated indoor hall with sprawling outdoor lanes. It's one of the rawest, most vivid slices of Ghanaian life anywhere.
Home of real Ghanaian food
Fufu with light soup originated here in Ashanti, alongside banku, grilled tilapia and rich groundnut soup. Kumasi is the country's comfort-food heartland.
