Where to stay in Lope — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks

Picture a tiny village on the banks of the Ogooué River where you step off the Trans-Gabon railway and, minutes later, find yourself in a forest roamed by hordes of brilliantly coloured mandrills, forest elephants, gorillas, and a rare savanna-rainforest mosaic found almost nowhere else on Earth. This is Lopé, the gateway to UNESCO World Heritage-listed Lopé National Park in the heart of Gabon. The town itself is small, barely paved, and ATM-free, yet it ranks among Central Africa's best wildlife destinations. This guide covers where to stay, what to see, what to eat, and how to get here smoothly.

Why stay in Lope

🦧

The mandrill capital of the world

Lopé is the single best place on Earth to see mandrills. In the dry season (Jul–Aug) hordes of 800 to over 1,350 individuals gather and stream across the grasslands — a spectacle you simply cannot witness anywhere else.

🌿

A one-of-a-kind savanna-forest mosaic

Lopé preserves the last relict grass savannas formed during the last ice age 15,000 years ago, so you see grassland and rainforest species side by side in a single, otherworldly landscape.

🏞️

A rare mixed World Heritage Site

Inscribed by UNESCO in 2007 as the Ecosystem and Relict Cultural Landscape of Lopé-Okanda, it combines exceptional biodiversity with over 1,800 Iron Age rock engravings.

🚂

Reachable by train

Unlike most Gabonese parks that require a charter flight, Lopé has its own Trans-Gabon railway station — step off the train and you're minutes from your lodge and the start of your safari.

🚆 Getting around Lope

🚂

Trans-Gabon Railway (SETRAG)

The main and easiest route: ride from Owendo station (Libreville) to Lopé station. Express and omnibus services run about three times a week, taking roughly 6–8 hours (usually evening departures arriving late). Always check timetables at setrag.ga first — they change twice a year and often run 1–2 hours late.

✈️

Fly into Libreville first

International flights land at Libreville's Léon-Mba International Airport (LBV); from there you connect by train or road to Lopé. There are no direct flights to Lopé.

🚗

Road to Lopé

Driving from Libreville is possible but long, and some sections are rough — especially in the rainy season. Many tours arrange transfers or let your lodge organise pickup.

🛶

Boats & safaris in the park

Inside the park you move by guide/lodge 4x4 and by boat on the Ogooué. You must book trips with a licensed guide — independent walking in the forest is not allowed.

💵

Bring enough CFA cash

The currency is the Central African CFA franc (XAF). Lopé has virtually no ATMs and few places accept cards, so withdraw enough cash in Libreville before you travel.

Where to go next near Lope

Frequently asked — where to stay in Lope

When is the best time to see mandrills in Lopé?+

The long dry season (Jun–Sep), and especially July–August, is the peak window when mandrill hordes gather in their largest numbers (several hundred to over 1,000). Rain is minimal and trails are easy, but it's also the busiest period and lodges fill fast, so book ahead.

How do I get to Lopé from Libreville?+

The most popular way is the Trans-Gabon railway (SETRAG) from Owendo station to Lopé station, running about three times a week and taking roughly 6–8 hours, usually with evening-to-night departures. Book a first-class/express seat and check the latest schedule at setrag.ga before you go.

Where should I stay in Lopé?+

The main option is the Lopé Hôtel, wooden bungalows on a hill with Ogooué River views, ranging from standard rooms to VIP suites. In town there are guesthouses and budget rooms (such as the in-town annexe) for tighter budgets. Book ahead, especially in the dry season.
