Ecuador — find the right stay, from deciding to booking

“Endemic Galapagos wildlife, a World Heritage capital at altitude, and the Amazon at the center of the world”

Ecuador is a country of four ecosystems packed into the smallest area — the Galapagos Islands, home to giant tortoises and marine iguanas; the World Heritage capital of Quito at 2,850 meters; the Mitad del Mundo equator monument; the colonial city of Cuenca with its sky-blue domes; the adventure town of Banos with its waterfalls and end-of-the-world swing; and pristine Amazon rainforest to the east — small, yet more diverse than you'd expect.

🚆 Getting around Ecuador

✈️

Domestic flights

Quito (UIO) and Guayaquil (GYE) are the main airport hubs — Galapagos flights depart only from these two.

🚌

Intercity buses

A bus network covers the whole country at low cost, with comfortable premium (ejecutivo) services.

🚕

Taxis and Uber

Uber works in Quito and Guayaquil — safer than regular taxis, and bookable straight through the app.

🚡

Quito Teleferico cable car

A cable car rising to 4,100 meters on Pichincha volcano, with views over the city and the entire Andean range.

🚢

Galapagos boats

Liveaboard cruises or day-trip boats — first fly from Quito or Guayaquil to Santa Cruz Island.

🛂 Etiquette & culture in Ecuador

🎭

Otavalo Indigenous market

South America's largest Indigenous textile and craft market, held every Saturday in Otavalo.

🎺

Pasillo, the national music

Ecuador's national music — guitars and violins playing beautifully melancholic melodies.

🤝

Greeting etiquette

A handshake and a single cheek touch (between men and women) is common — don't rush it.

Strong Catholic faith

Major churches close at certain times; respect sacred sites and don't wear shorts inside cathedrals.

🛡️

Safety

Main tourist cities are fairly safe — watch your bag in crowds and avoid going out alone at night.

💸 Daily budget — a rough guide

🎒

Budget

$29–57/ day / person

🛏️ Hostel / guesthouse $14–34

Ecuador uses USD and is cheaper than Thailand for many things — buses are cheap, and a local 'almuerzo' set meal costs about $3.

🧳

Comfort

$66–120/ day / person

🛏️ 3–4 star hotel $43–86

Equator tours, a rental car for the Andes, good restaurants, and a local guide.

Premium

$171+/ day / person

🛏️ Boutique hotel / lodge $100+

Small-ship Galapagos cruises, an Amazon lodge, and an expert private guide.

🗓️ When to visit Ecuador

☀️

Andean dry season

Jun – Aug

Great weather in the highlands and clear skies — the best time for hiking and visiting Quito and Cuenca, though it can be windy.

🌊

Galapagos dry/cool season

Jun – Nov

Cooler waters with a strong Humboldt current — dive to see sharks and mantas, with some cloud cover.

🐢

Galapagos warm season

Dec – May

Warm water, clear skies, giant tortoises breeding, brief showers on some days, and excellent visibility.

🌿

Amazon high-water season

Apr – Jul

High water lets boats reach deep into the forest, with more wildlife visible along the banks — some routes open only now.

FAQ — visiting Ecuador

How many days do you need in Ecuador?+

7–10 days — Quito and the Equator (2 days) plus Cuenca (2 days) plus Banos (1–2 days), or a separate 5–7 day Galapagos flight. To see it all, split it into separate trips.

Do travelers need a visa?+

Check the latest visa conditions with an embassy before traveling, as visa policies can change.

Is the Galapagos expensive?+

Much more than the mainland — domestic flights, a $200 park fee, and island tours are the main costs, but it's well worth it.

Does Quito's altitude affect you?+

Quito sits at 2,850 meters, and some people get altitude sickness (headache, shortness of breath) in the first 1–2 days. Drink plenty of water, rest well, and avoid alcohol on day one.

Tips before you go to Ecuador

  1. Ecuador uses US dollars — carry small bills, as small shops struggle to give change.
  2. The Galapagos requires a flight from Quito or Guayaquil — book tickets and tours in advance.
  3. Quito sits at 2,850 m — rest for a day before any long journey.
  4. Otavalo market is easy to reach from Quito (2 hrs) and best on Saturday mornings.
  5. The Uber app works in Quito and Guayaquil — safer than unmetered taxis.
  6. Banos is 3 hrs by bus from Quito; the end-of-the-world swing is just outside town.
