Where to stay in Portsmouth — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Portsmouth is Dominica's second-largest town, sitting quietly on the shore of Prince Rupert Bay — the island's widest, most sheltered natural harbour — on the northwest coast in Saint John Parish. This isn't a city of shops and skylines; it's a laid-back base camp for nature. Glide up the Indian River in a hand-rowed wooden boat through tunnels of mangrove looking for herons and iguanas (a setting used in Pirates of the Caribbean), walk the restored ramparts of Fort Shirley inside Cabrits National Park, then watch the sun drop behind the sailboats at Purple Turtle Beach. Portsmouth was long home to Ross University School of Medicine, whose international students filled the Picard district until the campus relocated to Barbados after Hurricane Maria in 2017.
Why stay in Portsmouth
The legendary Indian River
The widest of Dominica's 365 rivers. You ride a hand-rowed wooden boat (no engines allowed) through silent mangrove-root tunnels, spotting birds, crabs and iguanas — and yes, it featured in Pirates of the Caribbean.
History meets jungle
Cabrits National Park sits on a twin-peaked headland jutting into the sea, with the restored 18th-century British garrison of Fort Shirley and arguably the finest views over Prince Rupert Bay on the island.
Quiet beaches, great diving
Purple Turtle, Douglas Bay and Toucari Bay offer dark-sand shores and clear water with hardly a crowd — snorkel for octopus, parrotfish and even a wreck without fighting for space.
Real Dominica pace
Small, walkable and genuinely friendly, with lower costs than Roseau. It's the natural base for exploring the island's wild north without rushing.

🚆 Getting around Portsmouth
Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM)
The island's main airport is on the northeast coast, about a 45-minute drive (~32 km) from Portsmouth. Most arrivals connect via Barbados, Antigua or San Juan.
Local minibuses
There's no state bus system; privately run minibuses (plates prefixed 'H') link Roseau and Portsmouth, leaving when full rather than on a timetable. Cheap, paid in EC$.
Negotiate taxi fares
Taxis are unmetered — always agree the price before you set off. Find them at the airport, cruise berth and hotels; hire one for the day to tour the north.
East Caribbean Dollar (EC$)
The currency is the East Caribbean dollar (XCD), pegged at about 2.7 EC$ to 1 USD. USD is accepted in some places; there are ATMs in town, but carry cash.
By sea & Cabrits cruise berth
Prince Rupert Bay is a popular yacht anchorage (moorings managed by the PAYS association), while cruise ships dock at the Cabrits Cruise Berth in the park, walkable to town.

Who is Portsmouth best for, and how long should I stay?+
It suits nature lovers, divers and slow travellers using it as a base for the island's north. Plan 2–3 nights to cover the Indian River, Cabrits and Fort Shirley, plus the beaches and dive sites. To tour the whole island, add a stay in Roseau.
Is Ross University still in Portsmouth?+
No — Ross University School of Medicine, once based in the Picard district, moved permanently to Barbados in 2019 after Hurricane Maria damaged its campus in 2017. Picard still has guesthouses, cafés and a dive centre for visitors.
How do I book the Indian River tour and what does it cost?+
Book only through the Indian River Tour Guides Association at the in-town boat launch. Engines are banned to protect the ecosystem, so it's a hand-rowed trip of about 90 minutes. Agree the price first, and budget extra for a guide tip and drinks at the Bush Bar.
