Where to stay in Nicosia — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks

Nicosia, known in Greek as Lefkosia, is the capital of Cyprus and the last divided capital in the world — split since 1974 by the UN-patrolled Green Line that runs straight through its heart. The southern Greek-Cypriot side and the northern Turkish side sit just a short walk apart, and that walk is one of the most memorable things you can do here. Inside the perfectly preserved 11-pointed Venetian star-fort lies a maze of old streets, the lively Ledra Street, and a museum holding 10,000 years of island history. It is history you can still walk through, not just read about.

Why stay in Nicosia

🌍

The last divided capital

Walk through the Ledra Street checkpoint from the Greek side to the Turkish side in minutes, crossing a UN buffer zone you cannot see anywhere else on earth.

🏰

Intact Venetian star-fort

A 16th-century ring of walls in an 11-pointed star with 11 bastions wraps the entire old town — one of the best-preserved Renaissance fortifications in the eastern Mediterranean.

🏛️

10,000 years of archaeology

The Cyprus Museum runs from Neolithic figurines and Bronze Age gold to Roman sculpture, including the famous Aphrodite of Soli.

🍽️

Local meze, no tourist markup

Nicosia is a working capital, not a resort, so you eat real Cypriot food at local prices — halloumi, sheftalia, and meze spreads of twenty-plus small plates.

🚆 Getting around Nicosia

✈️

Larnaca Airport (LCA)

The main gateway sits ~54 km away — Nicosia has no civilian airport of its own. Fly into Larnaca, then transfer ~45–50 minutes into the city.

🚌

Kapnos shuttle bus

The Kapnos shuttle runs between Larnaca Airport and Nicosia throughout the day, ~50 minutes, around €10 for adults and €5 for children.

🚕

Taxi

A taxi from Larnaca to Nicosia runs roughly €40–55 by day and more at night. In town, use ride apps or metered taxis.

🚶

Walking the old town

The walled old town is compact and easy on foot — Ledra Street and Laiki Geitonia are pedestrianised, so you rarely need a car.

🛂

Crossing the Green Line

The Ledra Street checkpoint opens daily ~6am–midnight. Carry your passport (EU ID also works); you get a stamped slip rather than a passport stamp, and it takes 5–15 minutes.

Frequently asked — where to stay in Nicosia

Can I cross to the Turkish side (North Nicosia), and what do I need?+

Yes. Just walk through the Ledra Street checkpoint on Ledra Street, open daily roughly 6am to midnight. Bring your original passport (EU citizens can use a national ID card). They won't stamp your passport — you get a stamped slip instead — and the whole crossing takes only 5–15 minutes.

Should I stay in the old town or the modern centre?+

If it's your first visit and you aren't driving, stay in the walled old town around Laiki Geitonia and Ledra Street, where restaurants, cafés and sights are all on foot. Business travellers and drivers may prefer the Makarios Avenue area in the modern centre for larger hotels and easier parking.

When is the best time to visit Nicosia?+

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are best, with mild weather and thinner crowds. Summer (July–August) gets very hot, up to 37°C, because the city sits inland on the Mesaoria plain with no sea breeze.
