Where to stay in Freeport — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Freeport is the main town on Grand Bahama Island, the northernmost of the Bahamas, just about 108 km off the Florida coast. The draw here is simple: powder-white sand and impossibly clear turquoise water, plus Lucayan National Park, home to one of the longest underwater cave systems on Earth, and Gold Rock Beach, once named the best beach in the Caribbean. Built as a free-trade zone in the 1950s, Freeport is unusually spacious and orderly, easy to drive, and far calmer than most resort towns. It is ideal if you want the real Caribbean, minus the crowds.
Why stay in Freeport
World-class beaches
Gold Rock Beach inside Lucayan National Park was once named the Caribbean's best by USA Today. At low tide the white sand stretches out like a mirror. Taino Beach and Lucaya Beach have calm, shallow water that is perfect for families.
Legendary diving
UNEXSO in Freeport has run since the 1960s and is one of the most famous dive centers in the Caribbean, offering shark dives and dolphin swims. The park's underwater cave system is among the longest mapped in the world.
Easy-access nature
Garden of the Groves is a 12-acre botanical garden with waterfalls, butterflies and birds, and Rand Nature Centre has gentle trails through native pine forest. Everything is just a few minutes' drive apart.
Calm and uncrowded
Unlike busy Nassau, Freeport is spread out, the roads are open and the people are friendly. It suits travelers who want a slow Caribbean break without fighting for space on the sand.

🚆 Getting around Freeport
Grand Bahama International (FPO)
The island's main airport, about a 15-minute drive into town and the Lucaya area. A taxi from the airport to downtown runs roughly US$15–20.
Taxis (government-set fares)
Found at hotels, the airport and Port Lucaya. Fares are government-set and metered, starting around US$3, with a flat rate of about US$15 from the port to Lucaya.
Public bus / jitney
Fares are about US$1 within Freeport/Lucaya and US$2 to the West and East ends. Cheap, but there is no fixed schedule. Flag one down on the road.
Car rental (drive on the left)
Avis, Hertz and Dollar all rent here, handy for Lucayan National Park or the West End. Important: the Bahamas drives on the left side of the road.
Money and payments
The Bahamian dollar is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. Most places take US dollars and credit cards directly, so there is no need to exchange currency.

Frequently asked — where to stay in Freeport
Freeport or Nassau — which should I choose?+
Nassau (on New Providence) is busier, with casinos, nightlife and bigger crowds. Freeport on Grand Bahama is calmer and more about nature, beaches and diving. If you want a relaxed, uncrowded stretch of Caribbean coast, Freeport is the better fit.
When is the best time to visit Freeport?+
The best window is the dry season, mid-December to mid-April, with dry air, good sun and temperatures around 24–27°C. June through November is hurricane season, so check the forecast before you book.
Where should I stay on a first visit?+
Lucaya is the easy choice: it is on the beach and walkable to Port Lucaya Marketplace, restaurants, bars and the UNEXSO dive center, with both beachfront resorts and budget options.
