Azerbaijan — find the right stay, from deciding to booking

“Baku's World Heritage old city, the Flame Towers, mud volcanoes, and the Silk Road by the Caspian”

Azerbaijan is the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Central Asia on the shore of the Caspian Sea — the capital Baku blends the World Heritage Icherisheher old city with the modern Flame Towers, the ancient Ateshgah fire temple, the mud volcanoes at Gobustan and its prehistoric rock carvings, and further out lies the Silk Road town of Sheki, with its Shebeke-craftsman khan's palace and famous Pakhlava sweets — uncrowded by tourists, affordable, and a culture that warmly welcomes foreign guests.

🚆 Getting around Azerbaijan

🚇

Baku Metro

Baku's 2-line metro covers the main sights, is very cheap, and is paid with a BakıKart.

🚕

Taxis and Bolt

Bolt/Yandex Go are in Baku at reasonable prices — more convenient than hailing a street taxi.

🚌

Intercity buses

Buses run from Baku's bus station to Sheki, Gabala and other towns cheaply.

🚗

Car rental

Convenient for the mud volcanoes and routes outside the city; the main roads are good.

✈️

Baku International Airport

GYD connects to many cities in Europe and Asia; a bus or taxi reaches the city in about 30 minutes.

🛂 Etiquette & culture in Azerbaijan

🤝

A warm welcome for guests

Azerbaijani culture places great value on visitors; always accept the tea, food and snacks offered first.

🕌

Etiquette at sacred sites

Remove your shoes, women cover their hair, and dress modestly when entering a temple or mosque.

🎭

The Novruz festival

The Persian New Year (21 Mar), with fire, dancing and markets, very colourful — the festival season is the liveliest.

💵

Haggling at markets

You can bargain at carpet and souvenir markets; start from half the asking price.

🍷

No drinking alcohol in public

Azerbaijan is a (fairly liberal) Muslim country, but you should avoid drinking in public.

💸 Daily budget — a rough guide

🎒

$35–70/ day / person

🛏️ Hostel / budget hotel $20–45

Good restaurants, a Gobustan tour, and a hotel in the old-city quarter.

Premium

🛏️ Luxury hotel on the boulevard $130+

A 5-star hotel on the Caspian seafront, a spa, a private guide, and fine dining.

🗓️ When to visit Azerbaijan

🌸

Spring

Mar – May

Warm weather, blossoms, and the Novruz festival — the best time of year.

☀️

Early summer

Jun – Jul

Warm but not yet scorching, great for the old city and the Sheki-Gabala route.

🍂

Autumn

Sep – Oct

Cool, pleasant weather, leaves turning on the Caucasus mountains, fewer people, and good prices.

❄️

Winter

Dec – Feb

Baku is bearably cold, but Sheki and the mountains get snow with some spots closed, and accommodation is at its cheapest.

FAQ — visiting Azerbaijan

How many days should I spend in Azerbaijan?+

4–6 days — Baku 3 days (old city, Flame Towers, Heydar Aliyev Center, Ateshgah, Gobustan) + Sheki 1–2 days, or continue to Gabala-Shamakhi if you have more time.

Do Thai citizens need a visa?+

Apply for the e-visa (ASAN) in advance; check the latest conditions on the official website before you travel. The online process is straightforward.

Is Azerbaijan safe?+

It's very safe for tourists; you can walk around Baku at night comfortably. Watch for pickpockets in crowded markets as in any city.

What currency is used and where do I change it?+

The manat (AZN) can be changed at the airport, banks and exchange shops in the city. Cards are accepted at hotels and large malls, but markets and small shops use cash.

Tips before you go to Azerbaijan

  1. Explore Baku's old city in the morning or evening — the light is lovely and it's quieter than midday.
  2. View the Flame Towers at night from the rise above the old city, without paying to go up.
  3. Bolt and Yandex Go are much cheaper and more convenient than street taxis in Baku.
  4. You need to arrange transport from Baku to Gobustan — hire a car or share a guide with several people.
  5. Book Sheki accommodation ahead in high season, as there are few rooms and they fill up fast.
  6. Azerbaijani tea is offered everywhere; declining is seen as impolite, so accept it and just set it down.
