Azerbaijan — find the right stay, from deciding to booking
“Baku's World Heritage old city, the Flame Towers, mud volcanoes, and the Silk Road by the Caspian”
Azerbaijan is the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Central Asia on the shore of the Caspian Sea — the capital Baku blends the World Heritage Icherisheher old city with the modern Flame Towers, the ancient Ateshgah fire temple, the mud volcanoes at Gobustan and its prehistoric rock carvings, and further out lies the Silk Road town of Sheki, with its Shebeke-craftsman khan's palace and famous Pakhlava sweets — uncrowded by tourists, affordable, and a culture that warmly welcomes foreign guests.

Tips before you go to Azerbaijan
- Explore Baku's old city in the morning or evening — the light is lovely and it's quieter than midday.
- View the Flame Towers at night from the rise above the old city, without paying to go up.
- Bolt and Yandex Go are much cheaper and more convenient than street taxis in Baku.
- You need to arrange transport from Baku to Gobustan — hire a car or share a guide with several people.
- Book Sheki accommodation ahead in high season, as there are few rooms and they fill up fast.
- Azerbaijani tea is offered everywhere; declining is seen as impolite, so accept it and just set it down.
