Where to stay in Saranda — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Picture sipping coffee on a bayfront promenade while the Greek island of Corfu sits just 3 km across the channel. That's Sarandë, the unofficial capital of the Albanian Riviera. The Ionian Sea here runs clear and turquoise, the sun shines 300+ days a year, and your money goes far further than across the water in Greece. Within half an hour you can reach the UNESCO World Heritage ruins of Butrint and the white-sand beaches of Ksamil — often called the Maldives of the Balkans. This guide walks you through where to stay by neighborhood, what to see, what to eat, and how to get around, the way a friend who's been would tell you.
Why stay in Saranda
Crystal-clear Ionian water
The sea here is famously transparent, especially around Ksamil and Mirror Beach about 10 km south. With sun nearly year-round, swimming season runs from May into October.
UNESCO Butrint on the doorstep
Butrint National Park layers Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian ruins on one site, just a 25-minute drive from town. It's one of the Mediterranean's most rewarding archaeological day trips.
Riviera value for money
You get Mediterranean views on par with Greece or Italy, but hotels, meals and tours cost noticeably less. Big plates of fresh seafood stay friendly to budgets from backpacker to celebrating couple.
Gateway to Greece and the coast
A 30-40 minute fast ferry reaches Corfu, and the coast road north opens up Riviera villages like Himarë. Sarandë makes an ideal base for exploring southern Albania.

🚆 Getting around Saranda
Ferry from Corfu, Greece
The easiest arrival if you fly into Corfu. Fast hydrofoils take 30-40 minutes for around €25 one-way; slower car ferries take about 1h15 for €20-22. Operated by Finikas Lines and Ionian Seaways, with the port at the end of the promenade.
From Tirana Airport (Rinas)
If you fly into Albania's capital, it's a 4-5 hour road transfer south to Sarandë. If the Riviera is your main goal, many travelers prefer flying into Corfu and taking the ferry to skip the long minibus ride.
Furgon (local minibus)
Cheap shared minibuses run to Ksamil, Butrint, Gjirokastër and beyond. Catch them along the promenade. Ksamil costs about 150 lek (~$1.75) — far cheaper than a taxi, though you may wait for it to fill up.
Taxis in town & to Ksamil
Taxis wait at the port and along the promenade. Ksamil runs about $12-18; pre-book in peak season. Most of central Sarandë is walkable, and a taxi is the easy way up to Lëkurësi Castle.
Cash: bring Albanian lek
The currency is the Albanian lek (ALL) and Albania is still largely a cash society. Hotels and bigger restaurants take cards, but small shops, markets and furgons need cash, so withdraw lek from an ATM and keep some on you.

When is the best time to visit Sarandë?+
June and September are the sweet spots — warm water, everything open, but fewer crowds than peak. August is busiest, hottest and most humid with heavier traffic, so avoid it if you want relaxed, uncrowded beaches.
How do I get to Ksamil and Butrint from Sarandë?+
Both lie south of town: Ksamil is about 15 minutes away, with Butrint a little further on. A furgon (minibus) from the promenade is cheapest; a taxi to Ksamil runs about $12-18. Many people hire a driver to combine the Blue Eye, Ksamil, Butrint and Lëkurësi Castle in one day.
What currency is used, and can I pay by card?+
The currency is the Albanian lek (ALL), and the country is still largely cash-based. Hotels and larger restaurants accept cards, but small shops, markets and furgons want cash, so always carry some lek from an ATM.
