Da Nang is central Vietnam's main coastal city — a place that packs long stretches of beach, active temples, and modern architecture into one compact base. It's also the most convenient jumping-off point for Hoi An and My Son, two separate UNESCO World Heritage sites sitting just 30–50 km away. Whether you're after nature, history, or a photogenic landmark, Da Nang covers it.
#1 Golden Bridge & Ba Na Hills
The Golden Bridge is the attraction everyone comes to see. This 150-metre pedestrian walkway is designed to look as though it's held up by two enormous stone hands emerging from the mist and mountainside — an image that went globally viral shortly after it opened in 2018 and turned Ba Na Hills into one of Asia's most-photographed spots. The surrounding Ba Na Hills complex also has an amusement park, restaurants, and a French-village replica worth a full day of exploration.
- Arrive before 9 AM or late afternoon to avoid the thickest crowds
- The mountaintop is noticeably cooler than the city — bring a light jacket
- Admission covers the cable car; pricing is tiered by age
#2 Marble Mountains
The Marble Mountains are a cluster of five marble and limestone hills, each named after one of the five elements. Inside the rock are caves, tunnels, and more than 5 active Buddhist shrines that have been in use for centuries. You can reach the summit by lift or on foot via stone steps; from the top, the panorama takes in Da Nang city, the sea, and the full sweep of My Khe Beach.
- Wear shoes with grip — cave floors can be slippery
- A cheap lift runs up Thuy Son peak for anyone who prefers not to climb
- The base area has working marble sculptors whose pieces are available to buy as souvenirs
#3 Dragon Bridge
The Dragon Bridge is Da Nang's most recognisable structure — a 666-metre span shaped like a giant golden dragon stretching across the Han River. It opened in 2013 and has become central to local identity. Every weekend and on public holidays, the dragon breathes fire and water in a short show that draws both residents and visitors to the riverbank.
- The fire-and-water display runs every Saturday and Sunday night at around 9 PM
- The east bank of the river gives the clearest viewing angle
- The surrounding area has riverside restaurants and bars — good for settling in before the show
#4 My Khe Beach
My Khe is a 30-kilometre stretch of fine white sand where the water is shallow enough for swimming and the surf is consistent enough for kayaking and lessons. Sunrise and sunset are particularly striking here. The full length of the beach is lined with fresh seafood restaurants and accommodation at every price point.
- Between 5 and 7 AM locals come out to swim and exercise — a genuinely pleasant time to be here
- Red flags on the beach mean strong currents — don't swim when they're flying
- Seafood restaurants along the beach are best in the evening; book ahead in high season
#5 Lady Buddha & Son Tra Peninsula
The Lady Buddha statue at Linh Ung Pagoda stands 67 metres tall — one of the tallest Bodhisattva statues in Southeast Asia. Local fishing families have long believed she watches over those at sea and guides them home safely. The views from this point across the water and back over Da Nang are excellent. Son Tra Peninsula itself is a nature reserve where red-shanked douc langurs live in the forest along the access road.
- Watch for langur monkeys on the drive up — don't carry food, as they will approach for it
- Early morning mist around the statue creates an atmosphere unlike any other time of day
- Dress modestly — shoulders and legs covered — before entering the pagoda grounds
#6 Han Market
Han Market is Da Nang's oldest covered market, operating since the French colonial era. Inside you'll find silk, spices, Vietnamese coffee, dried seafood, and locally made clothing spread across two floors — fresh produce and ready-to-eat food downstairs, clothing and souvenir stalls above. It's a genuinely local, lively place with a character that polished shopping centres simply don't have.
- Bargaining is expected at every stall, especially for souvenirs — opening prices are typically 2–3 times higher than what sellers will accept
- 6–9 AM is the best window for fresh produce and full atmosphere
- Watch your pockets and bags when the market gets crowded
#7 Hoi An Ancient Town
Hoi An earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999. The old town is dense with merchant houses, temples, and shop-fronts dating from the 15th to 19th centuries, including the famous Japanese Covered Bridge. Tailors here can produce made-to-measure clothing — dresses, suits, ao dai — within 24 hours. After dark, thousands of lanterns light up the entire quarter in a way that has to be seen to be understood.
- Buy a combined ticket that covers entry to multiple historic sites in the old town
- Commissioning a tailor-made ao dai or silk suit here is genuinely good value
- Avoid midday when it's hot and crowded — late afternoon into the evening is far better
#8 My Son Sanctuary
My Son is a collection of Hindu temples built by the Cham Kingdom between the 4th and 13th centuries, granted UNESCO World Heritage status alongside Hoi An in 1999. The red-brick towers stand in a valley surrounded by forest and hills — a quiet, sobering site that stands as the most substantial surviving record of a civilisation that has otherwise largely disappeared.
- Arrive before 10 AM to avoid the worst heat; the site opens at 6 AM
- My Son pairs naturally with Hoi An as a full-day trip from Da Nang — allow 2–3 hours at the sanctuary itself
- Foreign visitor admission is 150,000 dong (approximately 200 baht / US$6)
