Cambridge is far more than a famous university — it is a city so beautiful it barely seems real. 700-year-old colleges line the banks of the River Cam, students still cycle across stone bridges as if out of a novel, and King's College Chapel stands as one of the most extraordinary structures humans have ever built. The city is small enough to cover on foot or by bike in a single day, yet rich enough that every corner turns up something new.

King's College Chapel, Cambridge, on a morning — four grey-white Gothic towers rise above a vivid green lawn #1
📍 King's Parade, central Cambridge

King's College Chapel

Ranked as the supreme example of late English Gothic architecture, King's College Chapel took more than 100 years to build, beginning in 1446. Inside, the fan-vaulted stone ceiling is the finest of its kind in the world. Five hundred years of stained glass run the full length of the nave, depicting scenes from scripture in continuous colour. Every Christmas, the chapel's carol service is broadcast live to audiences around the globe.

Best time Early morning before 09:30 for photos, or 17:30 for the Choral Evensong service
How to get there About 25 minutes on foot from Cambridge station, or take the Citi 1/3/7 bus and alight at Emmanuel Street
Travel tips
  • Admission is £12–14 for general visitors; open 09:30–15:30 on weekdays (check ahead — the chapel closes during services).
  • Choral Evensong is free and open to the public every Tuesday–Saturday at 17:30 — the best free experience in Cambridge.
  • The best front-on photograph is from King's Parade before 9 a.m., before the crowds arrive.

The Backs, Cambridge, in spring — a field of yellow daffodils in bloom along the River Cam, reflecting King's College Chapel tower standing tall in the background #2
📍 Along the River Cam, behind the central college group

The Backs

A sweep of gardens and lawns running along the River Cam behind six of Cambridge's oldest colleges — including King's, Trinity, and St John's — and widely considered one of the finest views in Europe. In spring the meadows fill with yellow daffodils; in summer the grass is lush and punts crowd the water. The sight of King's College Chapel reflected in the Cam is one of the most iconic images in England.

Best time March–May for daffodils in bloom; June–August for punts on the water
How to get there Walk from King's Parade through the college gates to the river side, or approach along Queens Road from the north
Travel tips
  • Entry is free at all times along the public paths, though some college garden sections close at certain hours.
  • Hire a bicycle and ride the riverside path from The Backs to Jesus Green in half an hour.
  • The best photography angle is from Silver Street Bridge, framing King's College Chapel with the river in a single shot.

A wooden punt drifting along the clear green River Cam, steered by a standing pole-pusher at the stern, passengers relaxing beneath an ancient stone bridge #3
📍 Multiple landing stages along The Backs and Scudamore's Quayside

Punting on the River Cam

The defining Cambridge activity. A punt is a flat-bottomed wooden boat propelled by a long pole rather than oars, gliding under historic bridges for 45 minutes to an hour past Trinity, King's, St John's, and Clare colleges. You can hire a chauffeured punt with a commentary, or rent one and pole yourself — fair warning: many first-timers end up in the water.

Best time April–October; mornings 09:00–11:00 or afternoons 15:00–17:00 are quieter than midday
How to get there Scudamore's is at the bottom of Mill Lane, 5 minutes' walk from King's College
Travel tips
  • Choose between a chauffeured punt (£14–20 per person) or self-hire (£18–25 per hour per boat) — chauffeur is the better pick for first-timers since you get a guide too.
  • Book ahead in summer (June–August). The main landing stages are Scudamore's on Mill Lane and Quayside.
  • Even on an overcast day, a photo from the punt with King's College Chapel in the background comes out beautifully — no sunshine required.

The Great Gate entrance of Trinity College, Cambridge — an ancient grey stone tower decorated with royal arms and statues, tourists photographing in front #4
📍 Trinity Street, central Cambridge

Trinity College, Cambridge

The largest and most influential college at the University of Cambridge, founded by Henry VIII in 1546. The Great Court is the largest college courtyard in England. The Wren Library — designed by Christopher Wren — holds handwritten manuscripts by Milton and Newton. The apple tree in the grounds is claimed to descend from the tree that inspired Newton's theory of gravity.

Best time Mid-morning 10:00–12:00 before tour groups arrive; Wren Library open weekdays 12:00–14:00 only
How to get there 3 minutes' walk from King's College along Trinity Street; the main gate is on Trinity Street
Travel tips
  • Admission is £4–5; the Wren Library is free to enter, but only on weekday afternoons from 12:00 to 14:00.
  • The Great Court is open to visitors during set hours — check the timetable at the main gate.
  • The Wren Library holds handwritten manuscripts by Isaac Newton and A.A. Milne — the original Winnie-the-Pooh manuscript is genuinely here.

The entrance of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge — grand neoclassical columns, wide stone steps leading up to the main doors with visitors walking in #5
📍 Trumpington Street, south end of central Cambridge

Fitzwilliam Museum

One of the best art museums in England, and entirely free to enter. The collection spans ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, European painting, and Asian art — over 500,000 objects in total — with notable works by Titian, Rembrandt, Monet, Renoir, and Picasso, alongside ancient coins and Chinese ceramics. The neoclassical main building dates to 1848.

Best time Weekday mornings 10:00–11:00 when it is least crowded; Sunday afternoons draw local residents for a leisurely visit
How to get there 10 minutes' walk south from King's College along Trumpington Street
Travel tips
  • Free admission every day; open 10:00–17:00, closed Mondays. Allow 2–3 hours to see it properly.
  • The Upper Galleries hold the French Impressionist paintings; the Lower Galleries have Egyptian and Roman antiquities.
  • The museum café is open daily — the lunch is better than most places in the tourist centre and fairly priced.

Mathematical Bridge — an orange-brown wooden arch at Queens' College, Cambridge, spanning the green River Cam with a punt passing underneath #6
📍 Queens' College, on the River Cam

Mathematical Bridge

Cambridge's most famous bridge, and the most mythologised. The popular story — that Newton designed it without nails — is wrong; it was built in 1749, well after Newton's death. What is true is that it is a feat of mathematical engineering: straight timber members placed at calculated angles to create the appearance of a continuous arch. From the right angle it looks like a series of perfect curves. It is one of the most photographed spots in Cambridge.

Best time Any time of day; light is best in the afternoon 14:00–16:00; looks spectacular from a punt in any season
How to get there Silver Street Bridge is 5 minutes' walk from King's College — follow Silver Street down to the river
Travel tips
  • Free to view from outside Queens' College; to walk across the bridge itself, pay college admission (£5–6).
  • Best photography angle is from Silver Street Bridge, looking down the River Cam with the Mathematical Bridge in the background.
  • A punt passing under the bridge gives a completely different vantage point and a shot unlike any other.

Before You Pack

Cambridge is at its most beautiful in late spring (April–June), when flowers are out and graduation season fills the streets, or in autumn (September–November), when the air is crisp and the leaves turn. Plan at least one overnight stay to experience the city in the evening after day-trippers have gone home.
