Annecy is the city everyone assumes must be heavily filtered in photos — until they arrive and find it looks even better in person. Lake Annecy is clear enough to see the bottom at depths of more than 10 metres, the pastel-painted Old Town sits along canals fed by glacier-cold water year-round, and a medieval castle looks down from the hillside like something out of a storybook. Rich Savoyard food waits after a day of exploring. This is a place you arrive at and immediately stop wanting to leave.
#1 Lake Annecy
The clearest freshwater lake in Europe, covering 27 square kilometres and ringed by steep Alpine ridges. The water comes from glacial melt above, which keeps it transparent and cold throughout the year. A law banning wastewater discharge — in place for over 50 years — is the reason it has stayed this way. Along the shore you'll find the Jardins de l'Europe for sitting and reading, public swimming beaches open in summer, and the best sunset viewpoints in the city.
- Plage d'Albigny is free in summer and a 15-minute walk from the train station — the water is clear enough to swim in without hesitation.
- Rent a bicycle and ride the full circuit around the lake (40 km); plan half a day to a full day. The route is scenic the entire way.
- Between 6 and 8 in the morning, thin mist hangs over the lake and the mountains reflect in the still water — photographers should not sleep through this.
#2 Annecy Old Town
One of the most intact and beautiful old towns in France. Medieval pastel buildings line the Thiou canal, which flows directly from the lake all year. The narrow cobbled streets are packed with cheese shops, wine merchants, chocolate makers, and local restaurants. In the evening, golden light falls across the red-orange facades and reflects green in the canal below — an atmosphere so cinematic it barely feels real.
- Duck into the side streets off the main Rue Sainte-Claire and you'll find smaller shops with more reasonable prices than the tourist drag.
- The morning market runs Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday at Quai de l'Hôtel de Ville from 7:00 to 13:00, selling fresh vegetables, local cheeses, and souvenirs.
- Come back after 18:00 when the tour groups have left — the town quiets considerably and the evening light is far better than midday.
#3 Palais de l'Isle
The most recognisable landmark in Annecy and one of the most-photographed buildings in France. This 12th-century stone structure sits in the middle of the Thiou canal like a great stone ship anchored in the current. Over the centuries it has served as a residence for the city's rulers, a prison, a courthouse, and a mint. Today it houses the Annecy history museum. The reflection of the building in the green-clear canal water is the shot every visitor ends up with on their phone.
- The best angle is from Pont Morens to the northeast — from there you get both the building and the canal in one frame.
- Museum entry costs €6. Open daily 10:00–18:00, closed Tuesdays.
- At night the building is lit up and the reflection in the water is completely different from the daytime version — worth coming back for.
#4 Château d'Annecy
A medieval castle that has stood on this hill since the 13th century, originally the residence of the counts of Geneva. It now operates as a regional museum holding exhibitions on local history, Savoyard art, and the geology of the lake. The standout feature is the upper terrace, which gives a 360-degree panoramic view over Lake Annecy and the surrounding Alps — the highest and most complete vantage point in the city.
- Entry is €6.70. Open daily 10:00–18:00; closed Mondays year-round and Tuesdays in winter.
- The path up from the Old Town involves stairs and steep ramps. Wear walking shoes — heels are not practical here.
- The best view is from the Tour de la Reine tower at the top of the castle. It takes an extra 5 minutes to climb but is worth every step.
#5 Pont des Amours
A legendary white iron footbridge carrying the belief that couples who kiss on it will stay together forever. Built in 1907, it crosses the Vassé canal connecting the Jardins de l'Europe to the harbour. The water below is clear enough to watch fish over the pebbles. The bridge is surrounded by carefully planted trees and flowers throughout the year. In summer, a steady stream of visitors comes to photograph it and stroll along the water — it is the romantic symbol of Annecy that everyone eventually walks to.
- Before 8:00 in the morning or after 19:00 in the evening, the bridge is far less crowded — much better for photographs without a frame full of strangers.
- Continue along the Vassé canal heading north for 10 minutes and you reach the Nouvelle Ville district with good cafés and boutiques.
- In autumn the trees around the bridge turn gold — a completely different atmosphere from the summer version.
#6 Talloires
An ancient fishing village on the lake shore that has repeatedly been called the most beautiful village in France. White stone houses line the water, a 10th-century abbey reflects in the emerald lake, and sheer mountains rise behind like a stage set. Paul Cézanne and several other Impressionist painters came here to work. The small harbour rents rowing boats and motorboats, and the waterside restaurants serve fresh perch caught from the lake. The village has held on to its original character in a way that is genuinely remarkable.
- Rent a rowing boat or paddleboard from the Talloires harbour for €15–20 per hour. The view from the middle of the lake is better than anything from the shore.
- Auberge du Père Bise, a Michelin-rated restaurant in the village, needs to be booked several weeks in advance if you want a special meal.
- Bus 6051 from Annecy to Talloires runs every 30 minutes and takes about 30 minutes for €1.50 — easier than driving and parking.

Before You Pack
Annecy is at its best in summer (June–September) when the lake is warm enough to swim in, and in winter (December–March) when the mountains are covered in snow. Plan for at least 2 to 3 days to take in the lake, the Old Town, and the villages around the shore without feeling rushed.
